Morning light filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow in the guest bedroom where I had spent the night. I stretched my muscles, feeling the tension from my sleepless hours weighing on me. I couldn't help but think about Elijah in the next room, the freshly marked omega who now belonged to me. Doubt crept through my thoughts as I pondered if giving him space after marking him was the right thing to do.

In my forty-something years of life, I never thought I'd have a mate – much less one who was pregnant with my son's child. I recalled instances where such arrangements of alphas claiming pregnant omegas ended in disaster for everyone involved, and yet, I couldn't remember ever hearing of an alpha marking a deceased alpha's mate. Life never ceased to surprise me, it seemed.

I needed to see Elijah, to make sure he was okay. My alpha instincts pushed me to check on him, but I hesitated for a moment. Was I being overbearing? No, I decided, I had to know he was alright. I left the guest room and made my way to my own bedroom, expecting to find the vulnerable omega there.

The room was empty, the bed untouched, and a sudden fear gripped me. Where could Elijah be? I raced down the stairs, driven by the urgent need to find him. Was this paranoia normal after mating? The scent of breakfast wafted through the air, catching my attention. It led me to the dining room, where I found Elijah sitting at the table, devouring a hearty meal with Fritz, Viggy, and Zeke resting nearby.

"Jesus, you scared me," I exhaled, relief washing over me. "I didn't know where you were."

Elijah looked up from his plate, his gray eyes meeting mine. "I'm sorry, Nolan. I didn't mean to worry you. I found you sleeping in the other room, I didn't want to disturb you."

Suddenly aware of my racing pulse, I took a deep breath and forced myself to calm down. "It's fine, just... wake me up next time," I said, trying to sound stern. But my concern for him seeped through the cracks in my hardened exterior, revealing a vulnerability I hadn't allowed myself to feel in years.

I watched Elijah eat with a voracious appetite.

"Elijah... about last night," I started hesitantly. "I'm sorry for knotting you. I should have been more careful."

He glanced up at me, his gray eyes holding a surprising amount of understanding. "Nolan, I told you to do it. I wanted it, too. Besides," he added softly, "I feel liberated now that I have a mate again. I never realized how suffocated I felt before."

A wave of relief washed over me as his words sank in. He didn't blame me for what had happened between us. In fact, he seemed grateful for it. But there were still things we needed to take care of.

"Alright then," I murmured, trying not to let my relief show too much. "I set up an OBGYN appointment for you. You need to be looked after and start prenatal care if you haven't already.
